Well, I am starting a new 50 gallon tank, planted.
It is 36w by 15L, rectangular.
How much substrate should I be purchasing?
I have a 20 lb. bag of eco-complete. And then a 25 pound bag of small/medium river rock. That is 45 pounds of substrate and should give me just above 2 inches of cover. There will be some stones I place into the tank, and some driftwood.
I could not find peat anywhere, I've seen that recommendation.
It will be a freshwater tank. No Co2. Canister filter.

Re: New tank
Rule of thumb, 1-2lb-per-gallon. Going with what you have already you are close enough to meet the minimum 1lb-per-gallon. 2" of substrate is what I usually go with myself. That is with my SW tanks. But, the recommendation is pretty much the same across the board.

Re: New tank
Thanks, I think with setting some of my rocks into the substrate it will even it out some to get the requirement.

Re: New tank
find out what kind of water you have first, might not even need the peat, which is really just to make the water acidic

Re: New tank
I thought Peat was a base that could be used to help plants.
Which is why I am here learning.
