Possible and expense

Postby angelbaby (83) » Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:22 pm

Would it be possible to setup a 10 saltwater tank? If yes, how expense would it be. I'd love to have a little piece of the ocean in my home but I am super scared to set up a saltwater because of how pricey the fish seem to be

Hi, angelbaby. It's certainly possible to do a ten gallon saltwater tank, but I wouldn't recommend it because it will be a lot more difficult in terms of maintenance due to the small volume of water, and I suspect you will be dissatisfied with it very quickly, given how little you'll be able to stock. You can probably consult your newspaper or local trader websites if any exist and find a much bigger used setup for a pretty good price. This will require more patience, but you may be more satisfied with the end result.

Opinions on this will vary, but that is mine for what it's worth. :D
I'd love to stay and chat, but you're a total idiot.

A 10 gallon tank is possible, but I would try for a 20 or 29 myself, as those are more stable and a lot more satisfying to look at. I have a friend who has a 10G tank, and what he has is around 15 pounds of live rock, 1 shrimp, 1 small clown goby, and 1 clownfish, plus some snails. It's a very relaxing setup to watch, but no show stopper.

So it all depends on what livestock you want. Just remember, you have the tank, stand(maybe), light, filter, substrate, live rock, salt, food, meds, and a few other things.
It's ok to love a bottom dweller.

Thank you for the advice! I think I might see if I can get a 20ish gallon over the summer.
