Planning 5 Gal Diana Walstad Dry Start Method

Postby boet (412) » Sun Oct 28, 2012 7:39 pm

Hi All,

It has been a very long time and I am currently down to just my 50 Gal planted Aquarium. I had minor back surgery in May and it got too much so I gave my 45, 29 and 2.5 Gal tanks away. I am dying to start something new again :drooling: and so I'm looking at my 5 Gal that can sit at my desk at work.

This will be my second attempt at a soil based dry start method (2.5 gal) and I had lots of fun with that one. I used Miracle Grow Organic Soil mixed with crushed coral due to my softer water and it turned out wonderful.

So I am wondering, with this 5 Gal , does anyone have input on the use of Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sand in place of crushed coral for adding Calcium and Magnesium Carbonate to the soil mix? I purchased a small bag of the pale yellow and it says natural pigmented color - no paint or dye. Besides mixing within soil I thought maybe I could use this as a cap as well?

I will set this up as experiment unless someone says I am making a mistake

Thank you
Kathy
