Celestial Pearl Danio photo

Postby ballpc (537) » Sat Apr 06, 2013 10:38 pm

In the April 2013 issue on page 20-21 is a photo of what claims to be a Celestial Pearl Danio. I'm thinking it's a cross between Danio margaritatus and Danio erythromicron.

The fish in the photo displays the transparent red fins and dark spot at the base of the tail just like Danio erythromicron. These are not typical Danio margaritatus features. The spots on the fishes sides also looks like photos I've seen of crosses between the two fish. Look at any of the hundreds of photos of Celestial Pearl Danios available on the Internet and you will quickly see what I'm referring to.

I noticed that, I thought it looked a bit strange the light red fins and larger more elongated spotting, esp with the fish behind looking exactly as I would expect a Danio margaritatus to look like

Well it seems as though Johnny Jensen, the photographer who took this photo, no longer believes that this is Danio margaritatus. He has moved this photo to a new page on his own website... http://www.aquariumphoto.dk/danio_species_cf_margaritatus.htm

Photos of Danio margaritatus can now be found at this page on his website... http://www.aquariumphoto.dk/danio_margaritatus.htm

Looking at the two photos, it's very easy to tell that the photo that made it into the magazine is not a true Celestial Pearl Danio - Danio margaritatus.

My hats off to Johnny for making the change. A fantastic hobbyist and superb photographer.

I'd love to keep these again, but my next small project will not be the most suitable habitat for them. I guess I live though others for now. :D

CPD's are fantastic and one of my favorite fish, with pygmy corys, apistogramma agassizi, otos, and pseudomugil paskai rounding out the top five. Just need to track down some agassizi and I'll have them all. I've got 16 or 17 adults currently and a dozen fry I'm trying to grow out.

Also Spencer Jack has CPD's in currently at nice prices.

It should be very interesting to see if this fish is indeed a cross between Danio margaritatus and Danio erythromicron, or something entirely new!

Yes, he quite literally has a "cloud" of them in one tank and quite a few in another. CPD's are nice and down the road, I'll own them again.
