Need something to kill aiptasia and majano fast

Postby SteveJor (56) » Mon Mar 18, 2013 12:34 pm

Tried kalk injections, tried aiptasia-x, tried clibanarius hermits, tried peppermints (lionfish did away with them), tried berghias (no idea where they disapeared to)......nothing worked.
I had thought about a copperband but have heard they are hit or miss with the problem anemones and are difficult to keep.
These things are growing and spreading.
What started as 1 aiptasia and 1 majano has turned into 9 aiptasia and 2 majano (that I know of).
I need something that will kill these asap.

Can't you remove the pieces of rock and give them a dip? You might want to try this as an extreme measure to remove these pests.

Unfortunately, All that you have done so far is strictly Slowing their production down. There are only a few things that completely kill and eat ALL of the aiptasia. If any of it is left in a crevice or pocket or anything, it will come right back twice as hard. It is rare to eradicate all of them and never see them again. I usually remove the rock immediately in hopes of stoping their production. They are known to move throughout the tank leaving pieces of themselves which then turn into new aiptasia.

If you can find them, I would recommend Berghia Nudibranch. They are known to completely remove all of them and their bases. But, Once the aiptasia population is gone you would want to remove them solely because that is ALL they eat! They will otherwise starve and foul the tank water. I have had good success with them but it is tedious trying to catch them all afterwards. Plus, It isn't an overnight thing... It can take some time... I think there was an article in the TFH magazine about these little pests. . . Anyway, This may help you a bit. . . Check out this article( The Natural Choice for Aiptasia Control )

It is well known, that once you have them. . . You will have to make it part of your husbandry to keep them under control unless you catch it early. I have had to break down entire tanks and start fresh before. They are an EXTREME pest in my opinion. Hopefully this helps. . .

Note: Peppermint shrimp don't always work anyways... It all depends on which region they are taken from. Also, aiptasia isn't their only food source so they don't always go crazy for them. The Berghia Nudibranch ONLY eats aiptasia.

Hopefully, We can get these guys under control. . .

I tried these. Spent over $100 on the little things. Once I acclimated them and put them in the tank, I never saw them again. Don't know if they died afterwards or were eaten.

I may have to do this. Of course the rocks are the ones on the bottom so I'll need to tear it all apart but it may be the only thing I can do

Yeah, It can take a while. . . They have to get their population up. As long as water quality is good, they will multiply. It took quite a few months for me to see any results. I am going to try to find that article in the Magazine. The writer used them too and had good results but it took forever. But the end result was great.

But, If it is only on one rock so far! REMOVE IT! Try and catch it early. . . That would work as well. . .

I wish it was only one rock. It's on 3 different rocks. Each rock is the base one of each of the stacks.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that. . . I HATE aiptasia. It is BY FAR the Worst pest you can have in the SW Hobby(In My Opinion). I just got a new customer a few weeks ago... They called me to help fix their aiptasia problem... It was so bad I had to just break the tank down and start fresh. It was terrible. They said they noticed the first one only a few months ago. . . They didn't know they were pests until it was too late.

Yeah, they are scourge, thankfully I caught my issue early on and took care of them immediately, also, it was not on my Base Rock so it made removal and eradication all that much easier to contend with. Base rock removal is difficult without taking down the entire tank.

Any fish in there yet?

The dwarf lion is in there along with the one mantis (lion ate the other 2) and there was a clownfish but that is gone now too since the carpet anenome decided it likes the taste of fish.
Not having good luck with this tank.

If worse comes to worse Steve, setup a holding tank while you take care of the pests fish free. Yeah, sounds like you are having a bit of a go with that tank indeed. Hang in there though, I've been through much worse and stuck the course, just had to take a few different off and on ramps than expected.

Yeah, Never get discouraged. With this hobby comes some great hurdles. With proper husbandry and a watchful eye you won't have too many hurdles. Just clear the ones you've got now and move on. It's well worth it for this hobby. :D
