Best HOB skimmer for a 72 bow FOWLR?

Postby SteveJor (656) » Tue Jan 08, 2013 9:05 pm

I was thinking a Remora Pro but wanted to see if there were any other alternatives since it's been a while since I bought a skimmer. Thanks.

Hey Steve, I've got a Coralife Super Skimmer 125 on my 75g and it pulls a lot of skimate. Very easy removal of the collection cup makes it a plus as well! They offer a smaller and larger version (65 and 220), but I'd recommend the 125 for your application. I've got mine inside my sump, but you can hang it on the back as well. You'll need quite a bit of room behind the tank if you do hang it; I believe around 7" or so.

I have a homemade cabinet which is very low and skimmers won't fit in the sump, so I needed a HOB that wasn't an eyesore to use in 60 gallon tank with 10 gallon sump. I also wanted something that was easy to set up. I first bought the Instant Ocean SeaClone and if you do any bit of research you will find it is inexpensive with lots of lousy reviews. It really is a shame because it isn't a bad product. I was able to dial in the bubbles to get great skimate but that needed the purchase of a good quality airflow valve. Even with that it pumped a lot of microbubbles into the tank. This would be ideal in a sump with a bubble trap. The one I replaced it with I now swear by. The Aqua Euro USA Skimmer. It has a rectangular collection cup that you move up or down to adjust for your desired collection. No messing with airflow. Super simple and has a bubble trap and sophisticated return that prevents pumping bubbles into your tank.
