Typical flake fish food
So I've always used TetraMin tropical flakes and I've never had any issues and I've always been able to get fish such as Ram's and my recent find the Apistos to switch to the flakes fairly easy. This last weekend I decided to buy some Omega one Super color "natural protein" flake food, to my understanding this is one of the higher end better foods but none of my fish seem very excited about feeding time anymore.
So what are you all feed for a flake?

I've allways used tetracolor plus, tetraveggie, both flakes for most of the fish.then after lights out i drop in tetraveggie algae wafers, tetramin tablets,or hikari algae wafers,of course not all on the same day, switch them around.and a couple times a week i use different frozen food too.

Omega One Marine Flakes with Garlic. I live by this Flaked Food and will not use any other type of Flaked Food. But the fish get a varied diet and always switching it up.

Re: Typical flake fish food
It's always been a concern of mine switching all the time. I do try and keep a very well balanced diet for them, using flake, pellets, frozen, and live foods. I found through the years that feeding very sporadically and changing there food up, keeps things a little more real for them, witch is what I've always shot for.
My fall back though and main diet has always been a flake because its easy and can be bought almost anywhere. The market is just so clustered with different types I've been trying to see if there are any real perks to a specific type.

I've been using TetraMin for years with good results, but I always supplement with freeze-dried tubifex worms (various brands) and the occasional Hikari algae wafers after lights out.

Between Omega One and Hikari that's all I use for Commercial. Then I have a host of other foods that I feed. I find you can't go wrong with these two brands.

The tubifex worms I feed my fish are from Omega One.

Just remember, Flaked Food is almost like chips, while it does have some content, its more or less a snack. I usually supplement with veggies and bloodworms as a treat.

Re: Typical flake fish food
So I always thought that the flake food was the main stay and that all the different frozen and dried foods are the "treat". I have always fed in this way. My understanding has always been that the flake food had most (90% or better) of a fishes dietary needs taken care of. As well, most flakes seem to contain extra vitamins and bio extracts to help with digestion.

Once again, varied diet. While I do use Flaked Foods, I also use supplemental feedings as well. Also, not all Flaked Food are created equal. Like all food, I keep in the refrigerator.

Deffenitly, that's why I have brought up the topic. I'm sure there is a true flake food that will provide enough nutrition to keep fish healthy through out there life.

Re: Typical flake fish food
everything i have ever read about food says yes to flake being a great everyday food,as long as you give them something else once in awhile(couple times a week) and allso not feeding once or twice a week which is actually how i do it.most of the time i don't feed on WENS. and SUN. wens cause i'm not home(my one night off a week when i'm out shooting pool with my 2 oldest sons) and sun. cause i do water changes then.

Re: Typical flake fish food
I guess I've been pretty close to half & half with the flakes and the freeze dried tubifex, alternating between the two. And then, as I said, tossing in the occasional algae wafer for the Otos after dark. Hmm...that sounds like a club name.

Re: Typical flake fish food
Rather than look at the shape of the food, look at what is in it first, then decide if your fish eat it floating or sinking or whatever.
I used Omega One, then switched to
www.almostnaturaltropicalfishfood.com
Very similar product line, but less expensive.
High quality ingredients like whole fish and shellfish, not fish meal that has been stored in a warehouse for who knows how long. No grains.
Algae and vegetables are very high in the list of foods for herbivores. Not fish meal and grains. Read the label on some of those 'algae' wafers! Where's the ALGAE?
Specialty foods that are high in earthworms, shrimp or other foods.
THEN look at the forms:
Flakes, pellets, sinking or floating, wafers...
I also feed a wide range of frozen foods, and fresh or lightly cooked vegetables from the kitchen.
