Fertile Valley - My 10 gallon hybrid iwagumi Journal

Postby lucasgg (98) » Fri Mar 17, 2017 2:55 pm

Hi all! A few of you have seen my previous thread called 15 gallon in progress, and I had replaced my black line rasboras with boraras brigittae. This new aquascape will soon be their new home.

Specs: Aquasoil light, Ehem 2213 filter, 500k fluorescent bulbs, and a Hydor ETH heater.

Plants: Dwarf hairgrass, java fern, undecided (here's where I could use some help)

Future inhabitants: Amano shrinp, snails, Black Line Rasboras.

My current hardscape isn't assembled in the correct substrate, the aquasoil light was delayed thanks to winter weather in New York.

As previously mentioned, I'd greatly appreciate planting suggestions.

I've received the aquasoil today and re-scaped already. I've moved into the early stages of the dry start. The staurogyne repens, e tenellus, eleocharis acicularis, and hydrocotyle leucocephala have just been planted. I'm planning on getting hygro pinnatifida to go behind the main rock, and I still haven't decided on stems for the left side or any accent plants to direct focus and detail into the valley. Doing so will turn an aquarium into an aquascape, so I need just the right plants.

For a true Iwagumi I would stick with lower growing plants and leave the water column wide open. Just my 2 cents, oh sorry, 5 cents, we don't have Pennies in Canada anymore...

going the hybrid route to leave planting options open. I can't stand limiting my options just to satisfy the demands of a style.

True. It's all personal preference, just release that Black Rasboras like lots of swimming space in their tank as they are mid to top dwelling fish so leave some room for swimming.

Looking to buy E. tenellus, hygrophila pinnatifida, and anubias nana petite but aquariumplants.com is charging $18 for 2nd day air shipping. Do I even need such fast shipping? Where else could I buy these plants?

I agree, all thanks to my unofficial mentor Keith from ASW where I learned the basics of aquascaping. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for his cruelly honest yet informative critics.

Good to have someone "mentor" you. Congrats, that's how I got into planted tanks as well. In fact, it was someone from here in 2004.

Plants are in! Anubias nana petite and E. tenellus look great, but they sent the unrooted and emersed variety of hygrophila pinnatifida. I'll be expecting a melt than a grow back period.

If any of you have tips or stories of transitioning hygrophila pinnatifida from emersed to submerged that would help a lot!
