Re: Breeding Setups.
Looks pretty tough for the adult fish to get into, is that around a smaller container? Interesting.

Yes, it is actually. I tried it with my shiners but they would not settle in with it in the tank for some reason. But I may try it for other egg scatters. The idea was that I could just remove the container with the eggs and just hatch them out in that container.

You should have great success with your egg trap. I concocted something similar back when I was trying to get my Danio tinwini to spawn.

I put some moss, or a bit of nylon yarn on the top of mine to give the fish a target add get more eggs in the trap. LOL

I have found they also work great to catch some eggs when your breeders are in a community tank and you don't want to move them into a breeder set-up. Just drop in your trap, and in no time you will usually get some spawning activity over it.

Re: Breeding Setups.
Finally, shiner fry. I used a 6" plastic dish with fiver rocks in it for a egg catcher of sorts. I was not sure if they were spawning over it, but as it turns out they were. I just the dish out to discover a few dozen fry amongst the stones. So I placed it into a 5.5G for grow out and put in a new 6" dish with the parents. Pics to come.

Re: Breeding Setups.
Just a quick update on the breeding projects I have going at the moment.
- Pseudotropheus saulosi (still juvi's but there are a few males starting to change color and I did notice a female holding a few weeks ago but due to their young age I opted to leave her alone for the sake of 3 or 4 fry I could get if I removed her and stressed her out)
- Red Tailed Goodied (only have had them a week now but hoping to get a decent sized colony going. I seen one lone fry hiding among the floating plants so I hope that is the beginning of the colony)
- Black Barred Limia (producing like crazy in true live bearer form, I think 3 of the 4 females have dropped once so far but not huge broods but there there are a dozen or so fry darting around. I prefer to leave the adults in the tank when dealing with live bearers and provide a load of floating plant to act as hiding places for the fry. If I find this does not work well depending on the fish, I will remove the gravid female)
- Honeycomb Tatia (spawned twice so far but was not successful in getting the fry to a month old, hoping to have another kick at the cat soon)
- Yellow Convicts (no signs of spawning behavior so far but the females are maturing and starting to show their dorsal spots)
- Paratilapia sp. East Coast Small Spot (once spawn so far that I managed to rescue two fry from the main tank, and both are doing well in their grow out tanks
As you will notice four out of the six projects are registered C.A.R.E.S species, I guess I wanted to use my efforts for good, so why not breed something that is endangered.
