Really all depends on the cichlids that you have or are considering. Both African and South American Cichlids do have varieties that would do well with a Red Tail or Black Shark. At the same time, there are species that would kill such tankmates with relative ease. I would not recommend the Rainbow Shark, as they are far more dosil. Figure out what variety you are interested in first. You also did not mention what your tank size is. Cichlids need space and prefer caves to call home, make sure you have the room to provide for them properly.

You should be just fine with a Rainbow Shark in your community tank. I would not, however, do a Red Tail Shark. Be careful that you do not crowd your 20 gallon.

Red Tails are highly territorial, so any fish that live on the bottom will eventually suffer the wrath unless the tank is large enough that all fish can have space away from it's territory.

They (Red Tails) will define a territory and protect it.

My point exactly. RTS need space an territory. Best to let him enjoy his space and ensure other's don't encroach on his space.
