bettas jumping out

Postby fin01 (6) » Mon Feb 25, 2013 2:58 pm

Hello,

I had two female bettas. Yesterday, the last one jumped out of the aquarium, and I was not aware of it until today. The other female betta did the same action on February 19. So, I have had two bettas die because they wanted to jump out of the tank. Is it common for bettas to jump out of the tank ? I think the water quality is fine, and I recently replaced some of the water.

Bettas are jumpers --no fault of your water. You, obviously need a lid for your tank!

Three days in the sink? That is cool!

Did he come out with dish-pan fins?

Water level. The higher the water to the top of the container the more the urge to jump. Provide floating plant cover and that urge goes away. The floating plants help mimic it's natural surroundings and relax the Betta.

Thank you, Gary, for the insight. Do you know of any plant retailers for aquarium plants that you would suggest?

ScottFish: I was using a glass lid when my bettas jumped out. The lid was probably raised when the red one came out, but when the purple one jumped out I believe it was down. Therefore, she found the inch and a half gap along the length of my tank that was not occupied by the glass lid to do her escape. I have that gap because there has to be space for the pump and filter.

Fin01, any Garden center should have something that will help you out. I usually use Frogbit (resembles giant Duckweed, easier to remove and maintain) as I find this works the best.

The leaves on Frogbit curl up above the water, providing the Betta access to the surface.

Hi Gary,

Are you located in Canada? Maybe in Canada or whatever locality you are in would have garden centers with aquatic plants, but that's not how it is in central California, U.S. I live there and have lived there for 25 years. Also, do you think a large company like Petco would have Frogbit?

Julia
P.S. I know it probably seems really strange that I have not responded/read your post until today, April 11, but I kind of forgot about the forum for a while. I am sorry about that. I will try to be regularly signing in to check if I have received any replies to my posts.
