female betta color

Postby fin01 (6) » Thu Feb 14, 2013 3:32 pm

Hello,
I have a female betta that is purple in color. However, in the last few months, I have observed that she seems to have some red as a secondary color on the part of her ventral fin that is closest to her main body. ( I believe ventral means on the underside of the fish.) I am curious why she has that color because it did not seem to be there when I purchased her and I am under the impression that bettas have a single hue like green, white, red, blue, etc.

Well they can have more than one color, its perfectly normal to have multiple colors in one. I have wtwo females living together and one is red and green while the other is like yours witch seems to be a commcolor combo. You will be very suprised to see stripes form on her sides when she is ready for breeding. Female bettas have the ability to change there color very rapidly. Mine are always displaying amazing colors.

I've seen Bettas will multiple colors, it all depends on what strains have crossed to create that morph. I've seen a few that I swear look Tie-Dyed. More than possible.

Look around on Google for pictures of bettas with the marble gene. Some of them go through amazing color changes.

I think if I was rich and could afford staff I'd have racks and racks of betta tanks.

Betta are one of those fish in which you can do this with! Just ensure heat, good water quality and O2 and you can have yourself a Betta Building! While their needs are simple, they still require the same as all others!

I love my Betta as well, one day I am going to find a Purple one and when I do, it's a display tank for it! ROFL

I too love Betta Splendis, they are quite facinating in larger tanks. Years ago I used to raise these interesting fish in large numbers for local pet stores. I used 5 gal aquariums at the time in long lines. Center rows were all female, while I had males on either side. This allowed me to rotate the females up and down the rows to find males they were interested in. I had the best color luck with females of a more plain whitish coloring and males of varying color morphs. The more I bred females like this, the more stunning colors the fry developed. Just had to throw that one in there.

Saban, thanks for input and it's always welcome.

Yeah, I had a friend that did this in his garage, it turned into a Full Time Job for him so he eventually stopped. But he had such wonderful color morphs but no Purple Betta. This is top on my list. ;)

Never could get purple either. Some were close, but never fully colored. You find one, let me know.

I find one, I'll also be owning it Saban. That one color of Betta has been on my list for a long time.
