bettas and dwarf gouramis ??

Postby lou zello (384) » Thu Feb 07, 2013 5:34 pm

i just recently set up a10gal for my 7 and 12 yr old girls room,it's just for them so it has pink/purple/light blue gravel,a couple of castles,a fake rock/mountain,and a few live plants, including some floating water sprite.the first fish was a pure white male betta, the second a off white female betta---------they did NOT get along and the female killed the male!!she looks like she may have eggs or she may have killed him cause they were the same size(body wise minus the fins) anyway i got another male;a reddish one bigger than her and sofar they are getting along.now for my question:i love dwarf gouramis and would like to add a PAIR (male and female) but have never kept the two kinds together(bettas and dwarfs) and was wondering if anyone else has and how it worked,if it did,or if anyone thinks it would or not.I love dwarfs even though todays stock out there sucks, but found a home breeder thru my LFS that has great stock and would like to add a pair to the girls tank.allso as soon as i can i will post a photo of the girls tank. THANKS to anyone who replys to this.

Bad idea Lou. They inhabit the same areas of the tank and you'll get a quarrel, and believe it or not, the Dwarf Gourami will be the aggressors. I had a group (4) of Dwarf Gourami (T.pumlia) gang up and kill a Male Betta. They are highly aggressive.

Bad idea I currently have a male betta with a pearl Gourami in my 55gal and I can tell you for a fact the betta would be dead if not for the tank size. Even keeping more than one Gourami in a 10gal is asking a lot, just my 2cents I've never keep dwarfs but I've keep Giant Gouramis, Blue Gouramis, and pearl Gouramis all of witch have owned at least half the surface space of my 125 gal. The pearl in my 125 has no fear even my Angels will back away, and most everything in the tank knows better than to venture to his corner.

I kept a small group of T.pumlia (Sparkling Gourami) fooled by their size thinking they must be peaceful little fish. Until one day, my daughter called me into the room to witness them taking turns ramming into my Male Betta in the tank. I attempted to catch the Male Betta, whom also eluded me.

They made short work of him, within a few more hours of my futile attempts to capture him in a deeply planted tank, the Sparkling Gourami Hoodlums had quite rammed him to death.

I'm suprised your male and female Bettas are getting along. In most cases the male and female only group together during a breeding cycle. He will build his bubble nest, if she accepts it, they will breed. Once breeding has occured, the male will usually defend it against any trespassers. This includes the female. I also noticed you mentioned "Blue Lobsters", if you are refering to the Procambarus Clarkii, use caution in smaller aquariums as they are great at catching any tankmates.

... mainly at night as they sleep. Nocturnal Hunter.

Mixing Labyrinth Fish (even similar) is always a risk, keep the Betta separated in their own quiet world and they will live a long time.
