Saw a Gorgeous Fish

Postby clipclop (237) » Sun Feb 03, 2013 6:25 pm

My local fish store got in a few Black Ghost Knife fish in a recent shipment. Wow are they good looking! Pictures on the internet just don't capture their velvety blackness and lithe elegance. Alas, I think they are a little more fish than I can handle. They get to be two feet long, and they don't like living with others of the same species. Of course, I'm sure they are also quite happy to eat anything smaller than them, which is most of the commonly available non-aggressive schooling fish. I was describing them to my spouse, who thoughtfully commented, "I don't think l want an enormous tank with just one big mean fish in it." True. I don't either. Sigh. Reality bites.
Save the naugas! Use only sustainably harvested naughahyde!

We (Freshfish and I) were catching Knife Fish by the netload down in Bolivia. They are wonderful fish but yes, grow large, need a huge tank and are very predatory, in fact, it will be the only fish you see and they prefer dimly lit to no lighting at all to be truly happy.

I think the BGK is probably one of the best fish I've ever kept. I kept mine with a pair of angels a bichar and some tin foil barbs, in my 125gal years ago. It would eat out of my hand every night, although it was very shy my tank being a 125 gal had a 25watt light positioned all the way forward on the tank so the back and sides where dark. This helped a bit, but it still never failed anytime I wanted to show it off no one would ever be able to see him.

ROFL, true to it's nature then. They are elusive but a most beautiful fish when they are out. Dim lighting is the key or you'll never see it. If you can cater to it's needs, it makes a wonderful and interesting inhabitant.
