New GT not eating

Cichlids (SICK-lid) are the shining stars of the freshwater aquarium hobby due in large part to their unique colors, behaviors, and parental styles. Cichlids from all areas of the world are discussed here so ask away.

New GT not eating

Postby AMcCaleb (26) » Thu Mar 21, 2013 7:13 pm

So, I have a new tank set up in my office at work. It's a 75 gallon tank that's only been up and running for a few weeks now. I used startzyme bacteria starter and some filter media from another one of my tanks to get the tank cycled. I left it empty for about a week and a half.
The nitrites and ammonia are stable at zero now. I was keeping a good eye on the levels during that first week to make sure it was stable before I added any fish. I have a Marineland Emperor 400 and a magnum 250 filter on the tank so it has plenty of filtration. The water is basic well water with a pH of 7.4 and dkh of 10 (per api test kit). I change 5 gallons every morning when I come in to work, which means I'll be changing a total of 25-30 gallons a week.
I was at the pet store and in one of their bigger tanks where they keep fish that have been donated to the store, they had a 5 inch green terror cichlid. I was going to wait another couple days to get one but I couldn't pass up on that fish. It looked in great shape with just a little bit of a nip on one of its pectoral fins but other than that unscathed and healthy looking. So, I picked him up.
He seems to be swimming just fine and doesn't seem particularly stressed although he's a little shy when the lights first come on in the morning. I have since added a 3 inch electric blue dwarf crayfish. They didn't get along at first but now seem to ignore each other.
Anyways, the problem is that the GT hasn't eaten anything that I can tell since I got him. I've tried NLS cichlid pellets, bloodworms and tetra min cichlid sticks, and he hasn't really shown any interest in any of them. I got him last Friday and it's Thursday and still no interest in eating. Is this normal for GT's not to eat for a bit when they're first added?
I've tested the water today and Nitrites and Ammonia are still at zero. I didn't check nitrates but with the daily water changes I doubt that they've built up too much. Any hints on what I can try to get him to eat. I don't have any pics, but I've got a youtube video of what he looks like so you can take a look at the tank and make any suggestions. Thanks for looking.

If he grew to five inches he was eating at some point! Concentrate on keeping the water clean and temperature stable. You might think about a routine for the lights, for example a timer, or leave them off all together. As long as there are no plants lights are only for you to see the fish. Make sure you get the uneaten food out, and don't feed to much until he stats eating. You could ask the LFS what they were feeding him. I'd stick to one type of food until he starts. If they say for example they fed him flake then I would feed small pinches of flake until he eats. Then I would start increasing the amount until he is "full". Wait for him to wake up before you feed. My GT was somewhat personable and would come to the glass when I came in. Later after the first food is established mix a bit of the other food with it. Eventually he should take it all. NLS is great food by the way. All that being said most GT's are known to be pigs! He should be fine.

The lights are on a timer. They're on from 9-5 daily. I called the LFS and they said they were feeding the cichlid sticks so that's what I've been feeding the past couple days. I'm putting one stick in a day and then I end up vacuuming that stick out the next day when he doesn't eat it. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the advice

Have you tried more meaty foods and placed close to the fish when feeding. I usually target feed (with a turkey baster) problem fish.

Sounds like he is a bit stressed from all that's he's been through and not sure of his territory. What's the stats on the water? pH, Temp?
