Name this coral

Postby potterfish (73) » Sun Jul 05, 2015 9:28 pm

Does anyone have any idea what kind of coral this is???????
I received this coral about two weeks ago as a gift and I've had no luck in identifying it. When I received it there was growth from all the stems and now they are pulling in. I'm afraid that it's not getting what it needs but since I don't have a clue what it is I can't do my homework and see what it needs as far as water flow, lighting, feeding, ect.
Let me know if any more information would help.
Also yes I'm having some Cyanobacteria issues, it's on the upswing but I don't think it's affecting the coral, I could be wrong.

I took it to my supplier and he said it's a torch coral. He said it's a mid water type of coral that shouldn't be in the sand bed. I guess I messed that up.
Any ideas if this is true, also does anyone know how fast they grow?

It is a Torch Coral (Euphyllia glabrescens). With regard to other corals, it is aggressive, so be careful with the placement of any other corals, as it will sting/kill them. It requires good water flow and good lighting for it to be in best health. Your lighting will determine the placement in your tank.

Tell us more about your tank...what size is it, what type of filtration, what type of lighting?

So, how is this piece of Torch Coral doing? Any updates? Cyano can be a quick killer of most corals. Especially this species. It keeps the polyps from being able to open up and receive the necessary light for photosynthesis. In turn, "starves" the coral. You could try spot feeding the coral. I've brought back plenty for corals doing so. I recommend maybe trying Rod`s Food Original Blend 6oz. It has a little bit of everything that is good for corals and fish too. :D

Anyway, Just checking in for an update. :thumb:

Well I'm sad to say that I lost the torch and I also lost my frog spawn. I did change what I was feeding, I was using what I thought was a high grade flake so I switched to a frozen food diet and the cyano is now gone. I was surprised of how quickly it cleared up. So now I'm trying to get the nerve to spend the money to replace the two corals.

Well I am sorry to hear about the lost corals. I am glad to hear that you are using frozen foods though. I myself find them best for SW. I find that flake food is often wasted. Frozen is kind of a "all Natural" way... that's why I have always been a fan. If you do ever replace those lost corals, Please post some pictures. I love seeing them. Frogspawn is my favorite coral. Torch is my second favorite. ;-)
