Adding ghost shrimp...

Postby meh (1454) » Fri Sep 20, 2013 6:44 pm

Ok I want to add glass shrimp to my aquarium. I have 3 oto's and 4 cories adding 10-20 Ghost shrimp wouldnt be adding toomany bottom feeders would it? I want to add probly 15 and see how it goes because I am not sure if my biggest angel would try to eat them. But I got thick plant growth and caves where it is unreachable for her and her buddies. Just I want to know Can you have too many bottom feeders???

Well they will get eatin, if your tank is planted heavy enough they will have a fighting chance for a while. If you wait three or four hours after the lights go out befor adding them this will help too. Even in my 125 gallon tank (extremely over grown) I re stock my shrimp population every three months or so. There is only a pair of angels in that tank.

I went ahead and Put about 15 in today(5 with a bunch of eggs :happy2: ) I put the shrimp in first and fish in next and The shrimp are not food! I am worried about a few of the smaller ones but then there are some bigger than the neons that can not be eaten! My plant growth and caves will protect from 1 hungry angel. Out of all of the fish The only one able to eat the small ones is the big mama angel

Accept the fact, that eventually they will eaten, but the good news is while they are still around, they will hopefully breed for you and help with clean up. Ghost Shrimp will not tip the bioload unless you put in a hundred! I've had as many as 40 or 50 at a time in an Aquarium.

Eventually, even my Apistos went after them, and yes, introduce them at night or when the tank is dark.

I usually distract the other fish by feeding one side of the tank and introducing on the other.

Until you see a fish swimming around carrying a shrimp the same size lol!

I have found driftwood with lots of cracks and crevices to be the best shrimp habitat - although you won't necessarily see them all that often. Plenty of microfauna grows on the wood to give them a food source as they hide inside.

Someone will eat them, the other Shrimp most likely.
