My new tank installation

Postby Dutchman (2914) » Wed Feb 20, 2013 9:59 am

This has been in the make for a while, but this is how it was installed:

The floor wasn't very suitable so I decided to make a self-supporting shelf.

The first holes.

Image
Supporting the galv steel studs while the concrete hardens.

Image
All in place (each stud can take 450lb static load).

Image
Wooden spacers to create more vertical room.

Image
Enough space for 3 circuit breakers, a timer, a LED driver and the neutral bar.

Image
Bottom cover fitted.

Image
Top and sides fitted

Image
Behind the cover

Image
Empty tank in its final position

Image
Overflows viewed from the inside

Image
View from the other side of the wall
(The tank connects to an outside bog filter)

Image
Return pipes fitted

Image
Right-angle bends fitted

Image
Cover pipes fitted

Image
New tank in its final position and full of water

Beautiful Dutch! As expected, well designed/engineered/built. You're going to hold anything in there, or just water? :D

That is a Facinating design Dutchman. I love the look! That had to be pretty tedious! How long did it take you to get to this point? Like ScottFish said, What are you planning on keeping? I am definitely following this thread. :D

There's still a bit of work to be done. Busy with the LEDs. Glued them in position, but they still need to be (inter)connected.
I'm thinking off an African tank:
Pantodon Buchholzi
Phenacogrammus interruptus
Synodontis nigriventris
maybe a few Anomalochromis thomasi

The lay-out will be something like this:

So far as expected from you but I will wait till I see the lights installed before commenting. Using the outdoor for the dirty work is the ultimate design.

Hello Sujoi! Nice of you to comment.

Yes, the engineering design was the pleasant part, but here come the details.
Got a problem with the epoxy glue that should stick the LEDs to the Aluminium heatsink. Unfortunately. some of them don't stick. So I might have made a mistake (somewhere).

Lou,
Just watch this space! :D

I too have had some troubles with the adhesive and the LED's when I made my fixture. I actually used a glue that I sell at my Auto Part store called Gorilla Glue. It worked very well. Not sure how redally available that stuff is though where your at. :dontknow:

Watch this space Andrew. :D

Against ALL advice, I replaced all the glue with Marine Sealer. I did, however, put weights on the joints so that its only about 0.1mm (0.004") thick, meaning that the thermal transfer increase will be minimal.
Anyway, they're all stuck.

I have issues with adhesives, ask the local Medical Clinic, but I am looking forward to watching the beast progress, as always Dutch, your knowledge and designs are wild!
