Pond Filter vs Canister Filter

Postby CatWhat (364) » Mon Jun 20, 2016 7:39 pm

I am wondering if there is a difference between canister filters and pond filters that are similar a canister style. I ask as I am planning on using a regular canister filter for my 135G but have noticed that some pond filters are very close in price but seem to handle more volume. Basically I'm looking at or similar to the following:
Fluval FX6 - http://www.fluvalaquatics.com/ca/produc ... 2h-AKLEKO0

and

Any of these - http://www.lagunaponds.com/en_ca/filtra ... essurized/

Not sure if having a UV sterilizer will benefit in a aquarium or not either.

135 gallons is getting up there, in the borderline between aquarium and pond supplies.
If you have room, and want the extra space for media, then go with the pond filter.
UV can kill algae, ich and other parasites that spend enough time in the water that they go through the filter (the UV part).

UV may break down medications, so make sure you can turn it off if you need to medicate the tank. Often the UV will have a separate cord that plugs in the light.

UV is a non-specific killer, it will kill ANYTHING that comes into contact, including beneficial bacteria. For larger setups, I would go with the Pond system, as they are quick sturdy and designed to take a bit of a beating (also easy to modify and plumb)

After some checking of reviews on the Laguna going to recommend the Fluval for inside quietness and less repair problems.

Quiet is a good point. Aquarium filters have some thought put into them for this, pond filters do not matter so much.
