Cory Cats and BGK

Have a Freshwater/Saltwater Question? This is a place to put it and maybe it will be used in an upcoming issue of TFH Magazine in the Freshwater Q&A, Saltwater Q&A, or letters to the editor.

Cory Cats and BGK

Postby AMcCaleb (26) » Fri Feb 15, 2013 2:17 pm

So, I have a 120 tall aquarium that currently has a Black Ghost Knife and some Schwartz Cory Cats (plus several other types of fish). My question is this: As the Black Ghost Knife gets bigger (currently he's about 7 inches), is he going to pose a threat to my cory cats? I know cory cats have a spine that is used to deter predators and also even though the get less than two inches they are not a small bodied fish for their size. But, I know the BGK could get possibly as big as 16-18 inches. Does he pose a threat to them? Currently he doesn't show any interest in them at all.

I would say your just going to be feeding the BGK, but I have kept a BGK with fairly small tetras like black phantoms with no problems. With my experience if the BGK is fed well and ample hiding space is provided than you may have some luck.

Only problem is that you might be just feeding your BGK. I would exercise caution or go for a larger species of Corydoras maybe even Brochis.

The BGK Apteronotus albifronsis not just a large fish, but very inquisitive. I have had one for almost 11 years. At 39cm, there's very little he will not investigate. If it is etible, he will devour it. The size yours is now should not pose a problem, but be attentive. If you see your ghost dancing around yours corys, you might be asking for trouble.

To avoid the situation completely, just ensure you have a larger species of Corydoras. Yes, the "dance" is the checkout stage, kinda like me hovering in the Candy Aisle at the Grocery Store. :D
