All clownfish born as males

Have a Freshwater/Saltwater Question? This is a place to put it and maybe it will be used in an upcoming issue of TFH Magazine in the Freshwater Q&A, Saltwater Q&A, or letters to the editor.

All clownfish born as males

Postby IlianaM (40) » Thu Feb 07, 2013 6:26 pm

I have read that all clown fish are born males--but I have also read that all clown fish are born as "genderless" non-sexual juveniles, and that in a group, only the breeding pair contains a true male. What is accurate?

Clownfish are born as males and when two or more are housed together, the dominant male will morph into a female and grow larger than the male fish.
