My toadstool leather is lying down

Have a Freshwater/Saltwater Question? This is a place to put it and maybe it will be used in an upcoming issue of TFH Magazine in the Freshwater Q&A, Saltwater Q&A, or letters to the editor.

My toadstool leather is lying down

Postby Joylynn (6) » Sun Dec 23, 2012 7:40 pm

Hi, my 3 year old unplugged the heater for my 20 gallon long invert-only reef tank a few days ago. I didn't catch it for a couple hours and, of course, the water got pretty cold. Everything has made a full recovery except for the flatworms (Yay!) and my toadstool leather. The leather is still alive and the top part of it looks normal but its no longer upright. When I experimentally retracted it it withdrew all its tentacles and they came back out within an hour so I know its alive. The stalk is rigid and lying horizonatally on the rocks. Is it going to recover or should I try fragging it?

I'm positive that the cause of the problem was the drop in water temp but here are the other inhabitants of my tank - other polyps and mushrooms, a coral that looks like a skinny bird's nest coral except that its white, a small long spine sea urchin, a couple hermit crabs, some snails, some tiny white things that hang out on the glass, and other microorganisms. Its been about a year since I've added anything to the tank.

Thanks!
Joylynn

Hello Joylynn, sorry for our late reply. Have you had good results with your toadstool coral? I'm hoping all is well. I look forward to hearing from you.

Is this a somewhat mature (larger) Toadstool? Reason I ask is I have a several Toadstools and one of mine did this very same thing just before it ended up splitting. It's still one primary stalk, but mine now branches out with three new heads. Keep an eye on it, but my experience leads me to believe it's probably okay.

That is what I was thinking it was too. I am hoping for Joylynn sake that is what came of it. I am anxious to see what has happened.

Mine did the same thing. Branched out to now three heads. I thought it was dying at first until I saw the changes. Let us know how yours is doing.
